A passion for breeding and racing horses has played a key role in Hickman family life for several generations. Combining that passion with a foundation of stud stock success at Taimate, brothers David, Paul & John Hickman have now formed ‘Taimate Equine’ as a Thoroughbred and Standardbred bloodstock business.
History
The Hickman family has had a long association with Marlborough’s Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing clubs. Jack was president of the Marlborough racing club from 1968 to 1972 as well as breeding and racing several horses through the 70s including the successful Bacchus (with Graham Fuller). Jacks son Ossie became a racing club committee member in the 70s and went on to become president from 1997 to 2002 and again from 2008 to 2010 and remains a patron and life member of the club. Jacks brother Tom was president and a life member of the Marlborough trotting club. Tom began racing and breeding standardbreds back in 1969 with good mate Jimmy Forysth. In 2005 Tom & Ossie hit the headlines, breeding and racing NZ 3 year old trotting colt of the year Tozzie, who won the group 1 New Zealand trotting derby. That bloodline continues as a foundation family for Taimate Equine.

Future
Investment into and development of Thoroughbred breeding stock is the initial focus for Taimate Equine with a view to yearling sales. Racing colours have been registered and will be seen for the first time when the foundation foals breed by Taimate Equine (2 x fillies) race for a syndicate of family and friends. Watch this space….
